Preparation
Be ready at least ten minutes before the worship service (8:35 AM or 11:15 AM). Robes are in the closet in the church conference room (center church office). If you try one on and it doesn't, please hang it up before trying on the next one.
Make
sure that there is a bulletin and hymnal on the acolyte bench in the sanctuary.
Check with the Pastors or Youth Director for any special instructions.
Lighting the Candles
Check to make sure the Candle Lighter has a wick. Extra wicks are in the Sacristy. Matches should be available with the candle lighters. If you can't find any matches, check with someone in the office.
Increase or decrease the wick length with the sliding bar on the candle. After putting out the flame on the candle lighter, push the end of the wick back out beyond the end of the Candle Lighter.
At the 8:45 AM and the 11:15 AM service, light the candles during the Prelude (music before the worship service starts).
Acolytes are to walk together to the center gate of the Altar Rail, then calmly walk to the Altar and light the two candles.
If the Paschal Candle (tall white candle near the lectern) is to be lit for the service, it should be lit by one Acolyte. The other acolyte will light the Altar Candles.
Store the Candle Lighters next to the Acolyte Bench.
The Worship Service
Participate
in the worship service with the rest of the congregation. Sit up straight
and follow along in the "Order of Worship," Lutheran Book of Worship
and With One Voice.
Offering and Communion
Pick up the large Offering Plates from the shelves on the wall behind the Altar when the Organist begins to play the “Offertory.” (Your cue is to watch for the Ushers as they begin to walk down the isle with the offering.) Enter and exit through the Gate of the Altar Rail.
Stand
in front of the Gate with your heals against the step to receive the Offering
Plates from the Ushers.
Place the Offering Plates on the shelves on the wall behind the Altar. Return to the center of the altar rail (close the gate if asked by the Pastors—slide the vertical bars down.) If communion is served at stations, the Pastors will remind you to keep the gate open. The Acolyte who received the plate on the Lectern side of the Sanctuary will walk up to the Electrical Panel behind the Organist. The Acolyte who picked up the plate from the Sacristy side of the Sanctuary returns to the Acolyte Bench.
Prayers & Communion
The
Acolyte at the Electrical Panel must pay close attention during the Prayers.
When the Pastor leads the Lord’s Prayer, turn on the “Ringer” for the
Bells. Turn off the Ringer at “Amen.” Stay at the Electrical Panel for
a moment until the Pastor invites the Deacons and Acolytes to receive Holy
Communion. The Pastors may ask you to hold the Ciborium (chalice holding
extra communion wafers) during communion served from stations.
Occasionally, Pastors may also ask Acolytes to serve as Communion Deacons.
Extinguishing the Candles
Extinguish the Candles at the end of the service—after “Go in Peace.” Return the Candle Lighters to the Sacristy. Carefully hang up your robe in the closet.
Nursery Duty
Be in the nursery at least ten minutes before the worship service is scheduled to begin.
Help out however you may be needed, especially by playing with and getting to know the children in the nursery.
Assignments
Watch the mail for your assignment. If you are unable to serve when you are scheduled, you and your parents are responsible for finding a substitute. You may find it easiest to switch assignments with a friend. Please leave a message with Danny Stone (225-1119) in the church office so we are aware of the substitution or switch.
