Homework Night (now in the 11th year)
Homework
Night Program Description
K - 12th grade youth (with adult tutors and volunteers) gather for guided study, tutoring, discussions and fellowship at Messiah Lutheran Church, 305 W. Magnetic, Marquette, MI. During the MAPS school year, Homework Nights are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7 to 9 PM. Youth and adults utilize 8 classrooms on Messiah's ground floor. Snacks are provided free of charge. We have eight computer stations in the Youth and Family Center and stock the shelves with novels, craft supplies, reference books, games, sports equipment and Playstations.
Activity Nights run during the summer from 6 to 9 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Youth and adults gather for recreation, movies, snacks, fellowship and discussion.
Homework Nights & Activity Nights are funded by the generous support of Messiah Lutheran Church, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Marquette Morning Rotary and the Marquette Community Foundation. As with any youth initiative, we are continually seeking alternative sources of funding to offer improved services to youth. Currently, 15 to 30 youth attend each evening, and we obviously dream of helping more kids!
Homework Night Program Goals:
To provide Marquette area youth a safe environment where they may study and recreate.
To help Marquette area youth succeed in school by providing tutoring and helping youth to value their education.
To allow youth and adults the opportunity to develop nurturing relationships.

The Homework Night Plan (Rules for the kids)
As a responsible and mature K to 12th grade Marquette area youth I will abide by the following standards of conduct while at Homework Nights.
Arrive at Messiah no earlier than 7:00 PM.
Devote my first hour to homework or enrichment activities.
During the first hour and only when homework is complete, students may read, practice an instrument, draw, paint or work on a craft project—all at hushed levels.
During the first hour, students may talk quietly with peers while staying focused on homework.
Complete all assignments before recreation (fellowship).
Work in designated areas. Messiah Staff will assign me to a work site. During work period I will only be in my work site, by the Snack Table or the nearest restroom.
Use the Youth Ministry Computers for educational projects first and games only after 8:00 PM. Use the computers only during my registered times--Sign-Up Sheet is by the Snack Table.
Conserve resources: I will not waste soda, chips, cups, paper . . .
Respect the facilities. I will not disturb items stored in cabinets, slam doors, run through halls . . .
Respect other people: I will remain quiet in halls and study rooms. During recreation times, I will not yell, and at all times I will not tease, physically hurt others, or use vulgar language.
After 8:00 PM and only if I have finished all my homework, I may engage in fellowship activities (talking with friends, games on open computers). I understand that playing games is a privilege I earn by exhibiting proper behavior. I will remain in designated areas and keep volume and activity within safe and courteous levels.
I will clean up after myself and avoid making messes.
If I cannot conduct myself within these agreed upon limits, I understand YM Staff will ask me to leave for the evening or longer periods.
