Making Christ Known means Knowing Christ!

As congregations we are committed to Making Christ Known in our community, but this begs the question: Who is Christ?

Jesus, the babe born in Bethlehem, raised in Nazareth, ministered in Galilee, crucified in Jerusalem, risen on Easter morning, and ascended as the Christ, the Savior of the world, is who we are talking about.

But who is he for us, as individuals? Faith is not magically given. Faith is formed by encountering wonderful people who share with us the story of God’s amazing grace through Jesus Christ. It is in that vein that I invite every single member of Messiah and St. Mark’s to nurture, and grow in, their baptismal promise.

I am awed each time we gather around the font, utter words, both ancient and modern, and continue the faith to yet another generation – an unbroken chain to Jesus Christ. Everything we do comes out of the promise that God has not closed the doors on us, but continues to say, "Yes, you are my beloved child." Claimed and named as children of God, we carry the cross of faith, hope and love out our front doors and into a world, desperate to hear words of grace.

We are called not to membership, but discipleship. Disciples of Jesus Christ are committed to the reading of Scripture, prayer, worship, study, generous giving, and service. These are not options, nor are they a list from which we ‘pick and choose.’ We are to grow in all areas.

And so I invite you to re-commit yourselves to regular worship attendance, devote yourselves to the reading of Scripture, prayer and study, and engage in a world of service opportunities. As congregations we work to provide at least four opportunities to worship each week, as well as numerous Bible studies, adult forums, confirmation classes and overnights, Sunday school and God Club.

In these you will encounter people just like you – beloved children of God and fellow members of the Body of Christ – who desire to know who Christ is so that they can help in Making Christ Known. You will encounter faithful leaders and teachers. You will meet new disciples. You will be honored and respected for your insights, your questions, and your life’s experiences. You are needed and necessary in Making Christ Known.

Do not put it off, but make a commitment to begin right now! Today is the day!
